Fear

Hi Everyone, I’m Colleen Meissner with Divine Perspectives.

I want to add my thoughts on fear to the conversations I am seeing on the subject. Fear has been one of the “giants” that I have been battling for years and a topic I understand all too well.

I want to share a quick story and some encouragement. A few nights ago, I suddenly became overwhelmed with fear…the “I can’t breathe, I think I’m hyperventilating” type of irrational fear that comes when things around you are spinning out of control and there is nothing you can do about it. The only thing I could do was go to bed. As I lay there, the only prayer I could utter was, “Lord, I really need you right now.”

About 2:00 in the morning, I woke up, still very afraid. I opened up my Bible app to read that day’s daily reading, but three different times my Bible app kept jumping to a different day – and it was the same day every time. Now, I have been in relationship with the Lord long enough to know that He was leading me to that day’s scripture.

I want to share that scripture with you. If you are finding yourself in fear, then I hope this gives you the same encouragement it gave me…

Psalm 34:1 – 10 (written by King David)

I will extol the Lord at all times;
    his praise will always be on my lips.
I will glory in the Lord;
    let the afflicted hear and rejoice.
Glorify the Lord with me;
    let us exalt his name together.

I sought the Lord, and he answered me;
    he delivered me from all my fears.
Those who look to him are radiant;
    their faces are never covered with shame.
This poor man (or woman!) called, and the Lord heard him;
    he saved him out of all his troubles.
The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him,
    and he delivers them.

Taste and see that the Lord is good;
    blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.
Fear the Lord, you his holy people,
    for those who fear him lack nothing.
10 The lions may grow weak and hungry,
    but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.

Here’s what I really want you to hear, and why I share this story right now, with the world on lock down and with fear gripping the hearts of millions.

The Lord knew exactly what I needed and He answered my prayer. I hope this scripture encourages you if you are finding yourself in fear…but if not, I encourage you to reach out to the Lord and ask Him for your own scripture.

Will He do the same thing for you as He did for me? Maybe. But we serve a creative God and a good father. Just like any good parent, the Lord knows how to speak to each of his children in a way you will hear it and receive it. Even if you’re new to this, ask him to make it obvious to you. Sometimes it’s as simple as reading a scripture that seems to jump of the page and quicken your heart. Sometimes He will speak through a scene in a movie, or a line in a song, it could be something someone says… He speaks far more than we realize and He wants to speak with you. Especially now as the world seems to be falling apart and people are afraid and uncertain. What good father doesn’t want to comfort his frightened child? I am not special…what He did for me, I believe He wants to do for you.

To get you started, I’ve put a few scriptures on fear in my notes. Take care everyone, and remember to “stay strong and stay courageous.”

But Jesus refused to listen to what they were told and said to the Jewish official, “Don’t yield to fear. All you need to do is to keep on believing.” (TPT)

For the LORD our God is living among you. He is a mighty savior. He will take delight in you with gladness. With his love he will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.

-Zephaniah 3:17 (NLT)

Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name. You are mine.

-Isaiah 43:1(b) (ESV)

You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!

-Isaiah 26:3 (NLT)

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

-Psalm 46:1 (NIV)

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

-Philippians 4:6

Be strong. Be Courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.

-Deuteronomy 31:6 (NIV)

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your GOD will be with you wherever you go.

-Joshua 1:9 (NIV)
